Three curvilinear ditches are visible on visualisations derived from lidar data captured between 1998 and 2017 as subtle earthworks closely following the contours of a west-facing combe slope south of Aveton Gifford Bridge.
The visible earthworks measure circa 3 to 4m wide and 30 to 40m long.
The channels are possibly the gutters of a small former catch meadow of 19th to early 20th century date.
The possible gutters are not identifiable as earthworks on aerial photographs of 1946. This might be due to the direction of lighting and subtlety of the earthworks. Perhaps supporting the interpretation that the system ceased to be used and maintained some time prior to the 1940s.
Such systems irrigated combe slopes rather than valley floors using water abstracted from springs or streams. Originating in the medieval period they were in widespread use in Devon in the 19th and early 20th centuries.
