A pit is visible as an earthwork on aerial photographs of 1946 on the south-east facing slopes between Bittaford Wood and Forder Brook.
The visible earthwork corresponds with a feature depicted on the Tithe Map for Ugborough but is not shown on the Ordnance Survey 1880s 25inch First Edition map.
It is similar in appearance to a pit depicted on the OS First Edition as an ‘Old Quarry’ circa 130m to the north-east and is interpreted as an extractive pit of probable post-medieval to 19th century that had passed out of use by the 1880s.
The site of the pit was probably destroyed by a cutting to construct the A38.

Ordnance Survey, 2020, MasterMap 2020 (Cartographic). SDV363413.

The site of the pit was probably destroyed by a cutting to construct the A38.
