HER Number:MDV128032
Name:Field system at Broadley, Diptford

Summary

Earthworks of curvilinear and linear banks and ditches and a sub-circular hollow are visible on visualisations derived from lidar data captured in 2013. They are interpreted as evidence of a medieval or post-medieval field system, with associated trackways and possible pound, which had mostly fallen out of use by the mid-19th century.

Full description

Devon County Council, 1838-1848, Tithe Mosaic, approximately 1838-1848 (Cartographic). SDV349431.

Several earthworks correspond with field boundaries in this location.

NERC, 2013, LiDAR DTM data (1m resolution) Tellus: South Devon to Dartmoor, LIDAR SX7254; SX7354 Tellus DTM 01-JUL-2013 to 31-AUG-2013 (Cartographic). SDV361514.

Curvilinear and linear earthwork banks and ditches and a sub-circular hollow are visible as earthworks.

Hegarty, C., Knight, S. and Sims, R., 2019-2020, The South Devon Coast to Dartmoor Aerial Investigation and Mapping Survey. Area 2, Avon Valley to Plymouth (AI&M, formerly NMP) (Interpretation). SDV362982.

Curvilinear and linear earthwork banks, circa 7m wide and mostly northeast to southwest and northwest to southeast aligned, are visible on visualisations derived from lidar data captured in 2013. The earthworks occupy an area of circa 5.22 hectares and define a number of partial rectilinear land parcels of varying size. Two sets of closely spaced and parallel banks, located at SX72645443 and at SX73085455, both flank linear ditches which measure circa 7m wide. A shallow sub-circular hollow, circa 12m diameter, with outer bank, is additionally visible to the north at SX72835449. Several of the visible earthworks correspond with field boundaries shown on the mid-19th century Parish Tithe Map, although most of the earthworks are not shown on this map, or on later available historic maps. The surrounding historic field pattern is characterised as post-medieval enclosures. The earthworks are therefore interpreted as field boundaries of a possible medieval or post-medieval field system that had largely fallen out of use by the mid-19th century. The two linear bank-defined ditches to the east and west represent possible relict trackways and the sub-circular hollow to the north a possible associated pound.
