A curvilinear linear ditch circa 2m wide and 80m long is identifiable as an earthwork on aerial photographs of 1946 and visualisations derived from lidar data captured in 2019 on the north-facing slopes south of the Sheepham Brook.
The ditch might be the remains of a catch meadow gutter, probably of post-medieval to 19th century date. The ditch may continue eastwards close to the hedge line but this is not identifiable from the available data.
Catch meadows abstracted from springs or streams used channels, or gutters, to redistribute it to irrigate combe slopes. Originating probably in the medieval period they were in widespread use in Devon in the 19th century and continued in use into the mid-20th century.
