HER Number:MDV128542
Name:Quarry north-west of Witchcombe Farm, Ugborough

Summary

A rectilinear pit identifiable on lidar derived visualisations as an earthwork cut into the north-west facing slopes of a combe to the north-west of Witchcombe Farm might be the site of Witchcombe, slate quarry. The quarry, potentially of post-medieval origin, must have passed out of use prior to the 1880s.

Monument Type(s) and Dates

  • QUARRY (Post Medieval to XIX - 1540 AD to 1880 AD (Between))

Full description

Ordnance Survey, 1880-1899, First Edition Ordnance 25 inch map (Cartographic). SDV336179.

The visible earthworks correspond with a pit depicted on the Ordnance Survey 1880s First Edition 25inch map.

Ordnance Survey, 1904 - 1906, Second Edition Ordnance Survey 25 inch Map (Cartographic). SDV325644.

The pit is depicted as filled with trees and has therefore probbaly been unused for some time.

Royal Air Force, 1946, RAF/CPE/UK/1890, Devon County Council RAF/CPE/UK/1890 FS 2196-2197 10-DEC-1946 (Aerial Photograph). SDV169268.

The pit is obscured by dense tree cover.

Environment Agency, 2019, National Lidar Programme, LIDAR Environment Agency DTM 25-FEB-2019 (Cartographic). SDV363691.

A rectilinear pit is identifiable.

Hegarty, C., Knight, S. and Sims, R., 2019-2020, The South Devon Coast to Dartmoor Aerial Investigation and Mapping Survey. Area 2, Avon Valley to Plymouth (AI&M, formerly NMP) (Interpretation). SDV362982.

A rectilinear pit is identifiable as an earthwork circa 30m by 40m in size cut into the north-west facing slopes of a combe to the north-west of Witchcombe Farm on visualisations derived from lidar data captured in 2019.
The visible earthworks correspond with a pit depicted on the Ordnance Survey 1880s 25inch First Edition map. A rectilinear structure depicted within the pit corresponds with a slight mound on the lidar derived visualisations.
It is possible that this site is the same as that recorded as Witchcombe, slate quarry (MDV5056).
The quarry, potentially of post-medieval origin, probably passed out of use prior to the 1880s.
