An oval hollow, probably an extractive pit or small quarry of 19th century date, is visible as an earthwork on the north-west facing slope south of Yarnacombe Farm on aerial photographs of 1946 and remains identifiable on visualisations derived from lidar data captured in 2019.

Full description

Royal Air Force, 1946, RAF/CPE/UK/1890, Devon County Council RAF/CPE/UK/1890 RS 4093-4094 10-DEC-1946 (Aerial Photograph). SDV169268.

A pit is visible as an earthwork under pasture.

A pit is identifiable as a subtle earthwork.

An oval hollow is visible on aerial photographs of 1946 as an earthwork up to circa 30m across cut into the north-west facing slope to the south of south of Yarnacombe Farm.
The pit does not correspond with any feature depicted on the Tiothe Map for Modbury or the Ordnance Survey First Edition 25inch map.
It is interpreted as the remains of an extractive pit or small quarry of 19th century date that probably ceased to be worked by the early 19th century.
The pit remains identifiable as a subtle earthwork hollow on visualisations derived from lidar data captured in 2019.
