The visible earthworks do not correspond with any pit depicted on the Tithe Map for Modbury.

The pits are interpreted as extractive pits of probable post-medieval to 19th century date. They do not correspond with any features depicted on the Tithe Map for Modbury or the Ordnance Survey 25inch First Edition map and therefore probably ceased to be used by the early 19th century.
