Roughly parallel banks circa 4m to 15m wide, up to nearly 400m long and 5m to 20m apart are identifiable on visualisations derived from lidar data captured in 2019 as earthwork banks crossing the contours of the combe slopes at West Leigh.
The visible earthworks do not correspond with any field boundaries depicted on the Tithe Map for Modbury but are in keeping with the character of the surrounding field pattern, which has been characterised variously by HLC as Medieval enclosures, Medieval enclosure based on strip fields and post-medieval enclosure with Medieval elements.
The earthworks are probably the spread remains of an extensive strip field system of probable medieval origin that had been partly cleared by the early 19th century.
