Hegarty, C., Knight, S. and Sims, R., 2019-2020, The South Devon Coast to Dartmoor Aerial Investigation and Mapping Survey. Area 2, Avon Valley to Plymouth (AI&M, formerly NMP) (Interpretation). SDV362982.

Closely spaced parallel earthwork banks, circa 5m wide are visible as earthworks on aerial photographs of 1946 crossing the contours of three plots on the north facing slopes north of Bastard’s Park Cross.
The earthworks resemble banks recorded throughput Devon typically made to improve drainage and increased soil depth for tree planting in orchards of 19th or early 20th century date.
The plots in which the banks are visible are not listed as orchards on the Tithe Map for Modbury (Plots 638, 645 & 659, all listed as pasture).
This could support the interpretation of the banks as evidence of post-medieval to 19th century orchards that were cleared prior to 1840.
