Full description

South West Heritage Trust, 1838-1848, Digitised Tithe Maps and Transcribed Apportionments (Cartographic). SDV359954.

The visible cropmark does not correspond with any features depicted on the Tithe Map for Malborough.

DCC, 1989, DAP 6825, DAP 6825/13,15 27-JUL-1989 (PF) (Aerial Photograph). SDV351158.

Turner, S.C., 2005 - 2006, Devon Historic Landscape Characterisation Mapping (Cartographic). SDV349122.

This area was probably first enclosed with hedge-banks during the later middle ages. The curving form of the hedge-banks suggests that earlier it may have been farmed as open strip-fields.

Hegarty, C., Knight, S. and Sims, R., 2019-2020, The South Devon Coast to Dartmoor Aerial Investigation and Mapping Survey. Area 2, Avon Valley to Plymouth (AI&M, formerly NMP) (Interpretation). SDV362982.

A curvilinear ditch is visible on aerial photographs of 1989 as a cropmark 2m wide and circa 52m long, crossing the contours of the north-west of Horsecombe Cross.
The visible cropmark does not correspond with any features depicted on the Tithe Map for Malborough but appears to be aligned on depicted boundaries. It is also on a similar alignment to a field boundary to the west and the surrounding field pattern has been characterised by HLC as medieval enclosure based on strip fields.
The cropmark is interpreted as evidence of a field boundary of medieval origin that had been removed prior to circa 1840.
