A hollow is visible on aerial photographs of 1945 onwards as an oval earthwork measuring up to circa 40m across.
The visible earthwork corresponds with a plot depicted on the Tithe Map for West Alvington listed as ‘Willow Plot’ in the Tithe Apportionments (Plot 1540). The earthwork does not correspond with any feature depicted on the Ordnance Survey First Edition 25inch map.
The visible earthwork is interpreted as the remains of an extractive pit of post-medieval to early-19th century date that had ceased to be used prior to the 1840s and subsequently used to grow willow, probably being unsuited for other cultivation. This use had probably ceased between circa 1840 and 1880.
The pit remains identifiable as a subtle earthwork on visualisations derived from lidar data captured between 1998 and 2017.
