Full description

Robinson, R. + Hankin, C., 1980, Cairn on south-west slope of Penn Beacon (Worksheet). SDV151761.

Visited in April 1980. On steep south-west slope of Penn Beacon, a previously unrecorded barrow, part of a linear group of barrows along the contour. Circular, 5 metres diameter, circa 0.5 metres high. No sign of robbing. Turf covered, a few stones showing.

Penn Beacon S cairn '4' at SX59786229 of 4.0 metres diameter by 0.4 metres high is well preserved and almost certainly undamaged.

The mound is not identifiable as an earthwork.

The barrow was not identified on any aerial photographs or lidar derived visualisations available to the survey.

This cairn is one of several lying on the south-west slope of Penn Beacon. It consists of a mound of earth and stone 5 metres in diameter and 0.5 metres in height and covered with grass and heather.
