HER Number:MDV12989
Name:Enclosed hut circle settlement 350m south-west of Horn's Cross, Holne

Summary

Two adjoining enclosures and the remains of three associated structures lie on the gentle north-facing slope of Holne Ridge. One of the enclosures, which are both probably Prehistoric in origin, has been refurbished in a later period. This enclosure is as described by the Ordnance Survey in 1977. Abutting its west wall are the remains of the second enclosure measuring 30m north-south by 25m with less substantial walls 1.0m wide and 0.5m high. The north-west corner of the second enclosure has been disturbed by a later leat. Of the three structures two have origins in the prehistoric period while the current form of the third appears to be linked with the reuse of the eastern enclosure.

(14/07/1977) SX 6672 7084. A sub rectangular enclosure, 30m by 20m and 0.05 hectares, lying on a moderate, well drained, north west facing slope at 390m above OD. Its double faced walling, 1.7m wide, 0.8m high is in fair conditions and built of large boulders, many set traversely on edge.
There is a simple entrance, 1.0m wide, on the south west. It contains a freestanding, type 1, hut circle, internal diameter 2.5m, walls, 1.4m wide, built of small boulders and in poor condition, with a possible south west facing entrance. Surveyed at 1:10 000 scale on PFD.

(17/05/1999) at SX 6670 7082. Agglomerated enclosure forming part of a prehistoric settlement 330m south-west of Horn's Cross. Agglomerated enclousre with one attached and one internal hut circle.

Two adjoining enclosures at 'O Brook South-east' between two leats. The eastern enclosure surrounds two hut circles, one near the centre and the other in the north-west corner. The double-slabbed circuit wall is mostly intact and originally 1.5 metres wide and is still up to 0.6 metres high. A subsidiary enclosure to the west is a feeble structure one slab thick and now incomplete. (Figure 60.12 is orientated upside down, south should be towards the top of the page.)

Probert, S. A. J. + Newman, P., 1997, Holne Moor, Dartmoor, Devonshire. A Landscape Survey by the Royal Commission on the Historical Monuments of England (Report - Survey). SDV173671.

(06/01/1997) Centred SX 6671 7082.
The hut described by the Ordnance Survey (1977) lies at SX 6672 7083, within the refurbished enclosure. Its original form is somewhat unclear as it has been used as a repository for clearance stone. However, the remains suggest that it was terraced into the slope with an overall diameter of 7.5m. The interior is represented by an amorphous central hollow 3.2m north-south by 2.5m. There is no obvious entrance.
The second hut circle, at SX 6673 7082, lies immediately outside the south-eastern corner of the eastern enclosure. Though now heavily robbed it was formerly terraced into the slope with an internal diameter of 4.7m. Again there is no obvious entrance.
The third structure, at SX 6671 7083, inside the north-west corner of the refurbished, eastern, enclosure is a roughly circular feature 2.9m in internal diameter. The spread boulder walls measure 1.7m wide and 0.9m high and there is an entrance in the south side. The current form of this structure suggests that it is contemporary with the reuse of this enclosure.
