Full description

Ordnance Survey Archaeology Division, 1974, SX68NE55 (Ordnance Survey Archaeology Division Card). SDV256114.

(18/07/1974) At SX 6635 8621 is an isolated hut circle rather ruined and apparently single walled, 8.0m internal diameter with a perimeter of earthfast stones 0.5m high. The entrance is not discernible. A few rickles of field walls are apparent in the vicinity and doubtless the hut formed part of the Kestor Iron Age settlement (SX 68 NE 14) until the intervening area was stripped of field walls.

(11/10/1991) SX 6635 8628. A solitary hut circle on a moderate north-west facing slope 185m west of Castor Rock. The walls consist of large boulders and blocks and are, on average, 1.5m wide and 0.5m high. They enclose an area 7.8m in diameter that has been sub-divided by a slight bank 0.3m high positioned in a north-south line through the middle of the hut. A gap in the south wall may indicate the site of an entrance. External facing slabs are apparent on the east and north-eastern margins.
The grid reference given by The Ordnance Survey in 1974 is erroneous, no hut exists in that area. (see RCHME 1991 'Castor Survey' at 1:2500 scale).
