HER Number:MDV130426
Name:Possible lynchets off Anderton Lane, Tavistock

Summary

Three possible lynchets of former medieval strip fields are visible as earthwork banks or terraces on visualisations derived from lidar data captured in 2013 and 2016, on the north-east facing slopes. They are not depicted on mid to late- 19th century mapping and had presumably been removed prior to this.

Three curvilinear earthwork banks or terraces, circa 5 metres in width and parallel to the north-east facing slope, are visible on visualisations derived from lidar data captured in 2013 and 2016.
The earthworks are in keeping with the surrounding historic field pattern, which is characterised as medieval enclosures based on strip fields and as post-medieval enclosures.
They are interpreted as possible lynchets that demarcate the extent of former medieval strip fields. They are not depicted on mid to late- 19th century mapping and had presumably been removed prior to this.
