An irregularly shaped pit, circa 20 metres long by 7 metres wide, is visible as an earthwork on 1940’s RAF aerial photographs and on visualisations derived from lidar data captured in 2019.
The earthwork corresponds with an oval feature shown on the mid-19th century Parish Tithe Map. Its northern edge is defined by prominent kink in the field boundary on the late-19th century First Edition Ordnance Survey map and an earthwork labelled as ‘Quarry’ is shown to the east on this map. The pit also corresponds with an earthwork on the 2021 Ordnance Survey MasterMap.
The earthwork is therefore interpreted as a post-medieval or 19th century extractive pit that had probably passed out of use by the mid-19th century.
Ordnance Survey, 2021, MasterMap 2021 (Cartographic). SDV364015.
The pit corresponds with an earthwork.
