HER Number:MDV130781
Name:Possible hollow way south of Bere Ferrers

Summary

A linear hollow is visible as dark and pale cropmarks on aerial imagery taken from the 1940’s onwards and as an earthwork on visualisations derived from lidar data captured in 2013 and 2019. It is interpreted as a medieval or post-medieval hollow way that had passed out of use by the mid-19th century, but which had continued in use as a less formal trackway.

A linear hollow is visible as dark and pale cropmarks on aerial imagery taken from the 1940’s onwards and as an earthwork on visualisations derived from lidar data captured in 2013 and 2019.
The earthwork measures circa 13.5 metres wide by 315 metres long and is orientated north-east to south-west, crossing the south facing slope of a hillside.
It does not correspond with any features in this location on the mid-19th century Parish Tithe Map, although a possible hollow way or trackway is shown at its south-western extent and circa 215 metres to the north-east. A narrow dashed-line feature is, however, shown in this location on the early-20th century Second Edition Ordnance Survey map.
The earthwork is therefore interpreted as defining part of a more extensive hollow way of medieval or post-medieval date that extended from Bere Ferrers (SX45806342) to north-east of New Barn (SX45296290). The hollow way had evidently largely passed out of use by the mid-19th century but probably continued in use as a less formal trackway, as indicated on the early-20th century Second Edition OS map.

Understanding Landscapes Project, 2020-2021, University of Exeter Understanding Landscapes Project - Volunteer data, 223.4 (Interpretation). SDV363949.

An earthwork ditch of post-medieval date.
