Three irregularly shaped pits, between 15-72 metres long, are visible as earthworks on visualisations derived from lidar data captured in 2019.
The earthworks are situated within land parcels 398 and 400-402 on the mid-19th Parish Tithe Map, which are recorded as ‘Brook Old Orchard’ (398) and as ‘Cottage and Garden’ (400-402) on the accompanying Tithe Apportionment. This cottage is shown in the location of the western-most pit on the Tithe Map. By the time of the late-19th century First Edition Ordnance Survey map, however, the cottage had been demolished and an earthwork is shown in its place. A second larger earthwork, which corresponds with the eastern-most pit, is also shown on this map, as well as on the 2021 Ordnance Survey MasterMap.
The earthworks are therefore interpreted as possible mid to late-19th century extractive pits
that had probably passed out of use by the mid-20th century, with one of these pits probably associated with the demolition of the cottage.
The earthworks are not clearly visible on other available aerial imagery owing to tree cover in this area.

Ordnance Survey, 2021, MasterMap 2021 (Cartographic). SDV364015.

An earthwork is shown in this location.
