Full description

South West Heritage Trust, 1838-1848, Digitised Tithe Maps and Transcribed Apportionments, Plot 119 (Cartographic). SDV359954.

Cornborough is depicted on the Tithe Map; large dwelling ?mansion to the south-east of the site, with two small rectangular buildings on the north and eastern farm boundaries to the north of the house.

Ordnance Survey, 1880-1899, First Edition Ordnance 25 inch map (Cartographic). SDV336179.

Mostly unchanged from the Tithe Map depiction, although the dwelling appears to have been slightly extended.

Ordnance Survey, 1904 - 1906, Second Edition Ordnance Survey 25 inch Map (Cartographic). SDV325644.

Gover, J. E. B. + Mawer, A. + Stenton, F. M., 1931, The Place-Names of Devon: Part One, 84 (Monograph). SDV1312.

The spelling of Cornborough (1765) appears identical to 'Hornburgh' (1397, 1447, 1455), also 'Hurneburgh' (1474), 'Hornbrough' (1755). Change of initial consonant appears fairly recent.

Collings, A. G. + Manning, P. T. + Valentin, J., 2007, The North Devon Area of Outstanding Natural Beauty. Phase 1. Archaeological Survey. Summary Report, 2485 (Report - Assessment). SDV339712.

Cornborough is believed to have been the Hornburgh of 1397 (citing Gover et al. 1931, 84).

Ordnance Survey, 2021, MasterMap 2021 (Cartographic). SDV364015.

Depiction of Cornborough on the modern mapping is remarkably similar to the 19th century map depictions; appears unchanged from later 19th century.
