A series of shallow irregular shaped depressions are visible as earthworks on visualisations derived from lidar data captured in 2016 in Sandcombe Wood. The depressions cover a long area following the topographic contours along the top of a sloping hillside. A quarry is labelled on the First Edition OS map by several depicted tracks, but no depicted earthworks (MDV106770). This is no longer labelled by the Second Edition OS map. One of the depressions is visible on 1940s photographs and has similar appearance to a gravel pit recorded to the southwest (MDV106771). The depressions are interpreted as extractive pits of probable 19th or early 20th century origin, possibly for gravel, and may be part of the quarry depicted on the First Edition OS map. Alternatively some of the shallow and irregular shaped pits may be interpreted as peat cutting.
