The depression is situated within a plot recorded as 'Brick Plot or Little Cleeves' (Plot 534), and immediately above 'Brick Plot Orchard' on the Tithe Map. The plot names are indicative of brickworks (MDV106859). The depression is interpreted as a post-medieval extractive pit, probably for clay as part of a brickworks.
