Summary

A series of parallel linear banks are visible on images derived from lidar data captured in 2016 beneath woodland. A series of parallel linear banks are visible as earthworks on images derived from lidar data captured in 2016. They are orientated both north to south and north-east to south-west either side of a sloping combe. The banks are situated beneath plots recorded as woodland in the Tithe Survey. By the First Edition OS map the area is depicted as a mix of woodland, marshy grassland and orchard. By the mid-20th century the orchard had passed out of use and the rest of the area established as woodland.
The banks are interpreted as planting ridges for orchard trees of mid to late-19th century, part of which passed out of use by the late 19th century and part of which passed out of use by the mid-20th century. Alternatively, the earthworks could be a drainage system of post-medieval to 19th century origin.
