Full description

Probert, S. + Fletcher, M. + Newman, P., 1998, Willsworthy Training Area, Peter Tavy, Devon: An Archaeological survey by the Royal Commission on the Historical Monuments of England (Report - Survey). SDV350638.

(02/09/1998) A scattered group of stone clearance cairns visible as amorphous heaps of various sizes composed of portable granite stones and boulders. Probably clearance of post medieval origin. The cairns which are up to 2.5m in diameter and 0.3m high are spread randomly across a fairly steep SW-facing hillslope. They lie amidst broad linear bands of exposed clitter and shallow erosion gullies; few well-worn paths cut through these linear features.
Much of the portable surface stone has been utilised in the construction of the adjacent newtake wall. There is no evidence of an associated field system although these scattered clearance mounds may have been intended as raw material for field banks similar to those to the north (SX 58 SW 34).

(20/02/2001) These stone clearance heaps are as described.
