Three narrow curvilinear ditches are visible as earthworks on images derived from lidar data captured in 2016. The ditches are orientated east to west and correspond closely with the topographical contours of the south facing slope. A spring is depicted to the east on the First and Second Edition OS maps. The ditches are situated in a plot of pasture recorded as 'Dry Close' on the Tithe Map. The ditches are interpreted as the gutters of a 19th to early 20th century catch meadow system, that may have irrigated a particularly dry plot of land.
Catch meadows abstracted from springs or streams and redistributed it along channels or gutters to irrigate combe slopes rather than valley floors. Originating in the medieval period they were in widespread use in Devon in the 19th and early 20th centuries.
