Name:Tinner's hut within streamworks on the River Avon

Summary

Remains of a Medieval or later tinner's hut situated within streamworks on the left bank floodplain of the River Avon, 200 metres north of a clapper bridge (Monument HOB UID 441447). An archaeological field survey in 1995 recorded a rectangular structure measuring 5.4 metres by 2.4 metres with walls surviving to a maximum height of 1.2 metres. No interior details were visible though a possible entrance lies in the southeast corner.

Full description

Royal Commission for the Historical Monuments of England, 1993-1998, Dartmoor Royal Forest Project (Report - Survey). SDV346608.

(19/10/1995) SX 6565366398. A ruinous tinner's hut lies in an area of streamworking remains (Monument HOB UID 1063693) on the left bank floodplain of the River Avon 200 metres north of a clapper bridge (Monument HOB UID 441447). The former structure measures 5.4m north to south by 2.4m internally with revetted boulder walls 0.8m wide and 1.2m high. No interior details are visible though a possible entrance lies in the SE corner.
A 1:2500 scale area survey is deposited in the archive.
