Summary

The magazine serving Dartmoor Prison Quarry. Magazine lies in a field some 550m south of the workings. A shallow cutting in the hillside ends at a mortared granite façade pierced by a doorway giving access to the underground magazine. The single chamber measures 2.7m square and the barrel-vaulted ceiling is a maximum of 2.3m high. Rebates for an inwardly opening door are present and parts of an iron grill remain in situ on the outside.

[1364180] (23/08/2002) SX 58217409. A well-built trackway runs from a gateway to the south of the magazine to the Rundlestone road. The metalled surface is 2.5m wide and flanked by drainage ditches where necessary and in places it runs on a causeway. It is most likely that it was used to carry explosives to the quarry and in addition to this role may have formed part of a through route from the station avoiding the town centre.
