Name:Crane base at Foggintor Quarry

Summary

Circular coursed granite crane base near the northeast corner of the main part of Foggintor Quarry. It is c.4.5m in diameter and c.0.7m tall. It has a c.1.2 by c.1.4m hollow of 0.5m depth at its centre. It is located close to the end of tramway route MDV134435 and one of the crane's purposes may have been to load material into wagons using that line. This crane base appears to be depicted on the first edition Ordnance Survey map.

'Crane' is marked close to this location on the late 19th century historic map.

Crane base at SX 56677 73432. Circular coursed granite crane base near the northeast corner of the main part of Foggintor Quarry. It is c.4.5m in diameter and c.0.7m tall. It has a c.1.2 by c.1.4m hollow of 0.5m depth at its centre. It is located close to the end of tramway route MDV134435 and one of the crane's purposes may have been to load material into wagons using that line. This crane base appears to be depicted on the first edition Ordnance Survey map.
The crane base appears to be in a good, stable condition. It has a thin grass coating on its upper surface and there is a little bracken in the hollow at its centre. Four stones have been stood upright at what appear to be the four main points of the compass in a bizarre act of vandalism in recent years.
