HER Number:MDV134471
Name:Possible crane base at Foggintor Quarry

Summary

Remains of a circular granite-built crane base, tucked away in the eastern extremity of Foggintor Quarry. It is an estimated 4-4.5m in diameter and c.0.6-0.7m tall. It has a shallow depression in the centre (c.1m across, by estimate). Unlike the other crane bases within the quarry, this crane base seems to be the sole exception in not being next to a tramway route. Perhaps it worked in tandem with other cranes, moving material to within their reach.

The crane base is in poor, but stable, condition. It has partly tumbled apart in the south. It is now largely covered in turf which appears to have stabilized it. There is some low lying gorse encroachment on its upper surface.
