Place name first recorded 1242 (harris). Vis=local report gives medieval origin and connection with torre abbey. De babbecombe names are documented in c13 charters (seymour). Vis=substantial number of documents in dro concerned with babcombe manor, its tenements and holdings. From 1473 onwards (dro)vis=was a property of some size in 1780. In 1840 however, it consisted of a single holding of small size (pye).
