A small trial excavation was undertaken in Retreat Field, Topsham in 1949. Previously, pits dug in this area by the military had produced Roman material, including coarse pot, samian and tiles. In the trial excavations, no structure was found. The finds (given to Exeter Museum) included flints, roof tiles, coarse ware and samian, mostly dateable to the 2nd century. It is thought that soil had been tipped on Retreat Field in modern times in the process of laying out a park there.
