Full description

EXCLUDING DITCH, Untitled Source (Report - Survey). SDV162420.

Vis=14/4/1982 (greeves). Two very large ditched pillow mounds aligned downslope on upper edge of belt of dense rhododendrons. The lower obscured by undergrowth, the upper is c.35m long 9m wide.(excluding ditch).

A pillow mound, an artificial rabbit burrow of probable medieval to post-medieval date, is visible on aerial photographs of 1948 onwards as a ditched earthwork mound circa 34m long and 10m wide, aligned across the contours of the west facing slopes below Rook Tor. The enclosing ditch, made to aid drainage, is 2 to 4m wide.
The mound is largely obscured by vegetation on images derived from aerial photographs of 2007 but remains identifiable as an earthwork on visualisations derived from lidar data captured between 1998 and 2017.
