Summary

Barrow 'C' is one of thirteen in the cemetery on the ridge of Crownhill Down of 7.0 to 8.0 metres diameter by 0.2 metres high. The earthworks consist of two conjoined mounds divided by a later robber pit. The earthworks remain identifiable on aerial photographs

A mound is visible as an earthwork.

Barrow (c) two mounds originally with the northern badly holed. Barrow diameter 7.32 metres by up to 0.6 metres high. Other details: Monument 759.

Grinsell, L. V., 1978, Dartmoor Barrows, 170 (Article in Serial). SDV273224.

Large hollow surrounded by upcast from it. Perhaps a gutted cairn. Diameter 8.0 metres, height 0.2 metres.

Edwards, C., 1979, An archaeological survey of an area surrounding Hemerdon Ball (Report - Survey). SDV337241.

Site visited on 15th June 1979. A small flat topped barrow overlapped on southern sides by waste from a trial pit which divides it from its adjacent barrow. Barrow 'C' diameter 5 metres, height 0.1 metres.

Group of round barrows or cairns on Crownhill Down. Barrow (C) consists of two conjoined barrows. This disturbed barrow has a large oval pit dug into the centre. The mound is 8.9 metres by 8 metres across and the pit is 5.1 metres by 4.2 metres. The mound is 0.6 metres high and the pit is 1 metre deep. A distinct but low spoil spread which lies against the north side of the mound is 1.2 metres across and 0.3 metres high. Other details: Barrow C.

Two conjoined mounds are identifiable as an earthwork on aerial photographs of 1951 centred at circa SX57195984 on the south-west facing slopes of Crownhill Down, overlooking Old Bottle Hill leat. The earthworks remain visible on digital images derived from lidar data captured in 2013, where the conjoined mound earthworks measure approximately 16m across north to south and 9m wide east to west. An irregularly shaped pit up to circa 6m across is clearly identifiable on the southern edge of the northern mound.
The earthworks are interpreted as barrows of Bronze Age date.
The mounds remain visible as subtle earthworks on digital images derived from aerial photographs of 2016.
