Summary

A post-medieval to 19th century quarry is shown and recorded as 'Alder Quarry' on the First and Second Edition 1:2500 Ordnance Survey maps as a series of earthworks and structures and is visible as a water-filled pit on aerial photographs of 1947. The quarry was 'disused' by the early 20th century.

Bowman, A. C., Untitled Source (Migrated Record). SDV14682.

'alder' limestone quarry operated by w. S. Perry in 1896, employing six people (bowman).


BORN, Untitled Source (Migrated Record). SDV176348.

Pit water-filled, dammed and maintained as a lake, near a holiday complex. The waterwheel is 18m under water. High spoil heaps were tunnelled in 3 places to drain into leats; some indication of these on os 25" map. Small building to north of kiln, ruinous, one of several originally. Powder store se of these near quarry. Elaborate tramway system ran from quarry to tips and kilns + is shown on os (1885) map. All but one tramway around north edge of quarry had gone by 1905 (born).

Vis=21/08/2003(simpson) powder store shown as 'magazine' on historic mapping can be seen as three sides of a building situated within an earthen bank alongside the trackway opposite the flooded quarry.

Alder quarry is shown at this location on the 1st Edition 1:2500 OS map and shown as disused on the 2nd Edition map. A complex of spoil tips, buildings and tramways are recorded on the 1st and 2nd Edition OS maps: these are now hidden by tree cover, but the water-filled quarry pit is visible on aerial photographs (p1) and was digitally plotted as part of the National Mapping Programme.
