Bequest under the will of Bishop Stapledon of 1326 for maintenance of Essewater bridge.

Henderson, C. + Jervoise, E., 1938, Old Devon Bridges, 12 (Monograph). SDV2296.

Bridge at Ashmill, near Ashwater. This modern bridge is possibly on the site of "Essewater", of medieval origin. Said to be in decay in 1663 (henderson + jervoise).

Roadbridge over the River Carey. Circa late 18th century. Stone rubble. Two span bridge with a tall cutwater, a small flood span and stone rubble parapets. At the west end the parapets have been rebuilt. Capping stones visible beneath 20th century concrete.
