Wall dividing the two enclosures at 'The Rings' with courts or pens on both sides shown on 19th century map.

Worth, R. H., 1935, 12th Report of the Dartmoor Exploration Committee, 115-9, Figures 1-2 (Article in Serial). SDV259660.

The 'courts' at Riders Ring. The marked features of the enclosure, and directly associated with the hut circles. Stone walled enclosures built against the inner face of the north-east enclosure's walls, particularly on the north and west sides. A trench was excavated across one of these (Y) in 1930 (sx67956447), which revealed 'undisturbed natural ground'. Interpreted as cattle compounds or garden plots.

Site visited in May 1978. Full measurements on worksheet. Seven courts recognised in the southern enclosure, two of which are strictly outside the pound wall. 18 courts occur in the northern enclosure, and one free-standing example. Excavated court is no.17 in northern enclosure.

The wall dividing the two enclosures at 'Rider's Rings' has a series of animal pens 'Q' to 'U' entered from the north side which took the place of the dividing wall leaving a gap between pens 'A' and 'Q' for communication.

Wall shown on modern mapping as the north-east wall of the southern enclosure with pens or courts on both sides.

The sub-rectangular courts were pens for stock or cultivation plots. A row of 4 or 5 of these walled courts divides the settlement into two pounds. A typical court measures 13 - 14 metres.

Site visited on 4th May 1950. One of the courts at SX67956440 has disappeared.
Field Investigation on 18th July 1977. A total of 24 yards recognised, most of which are confined to the northern enclosure. All but one of the yards is adjacent to the enclosure wall.
