Full description

Devon Committee for Rescue Archaeology, Development File, File 35 (Unknown). SDV156767.

Site visit 21st June 1977 by Silvester, Rees et al. Watching brief arranged in advance of development. Higham considered that bank on the south side of Boarden Barn might be earlier than others in the vicinity.

Weddell, P. J., 16/08/1978, Exmouth Castle (Report - non-specific). SDV349784.

No building foundations were recorded on the site during a watching brief and no artefacts other that post medieval pottery and clay pipe were recovered. The site had been terraced at some time but the date for this is unknown.

Timms, S. C., 1976, The Devon Urban Survey, 1976. First Draft, 110 (Report - Survey). SDV341346.

One of two possible locations for site of a castle at Exmouth although there is no supporting evidence.

Higham, R. A., 1979, The Castles of Medieval Devon, 178 (Post-Graduate Thesis). SDV336189.

Local tradition has a castle at this location but there is no firm evidence for it.

Devon Committee for Rescue Archaeology, 21/06/1977, Untitled Source (Worksheet). SDV350199.

Site visit 21st June 1977. Reputed site of Exmouth Castle at the junction of Long Causeway and Raddenstile Lane. The only grounds for the siting is local tradition, there being no documentary evidence. It is, however, a good site for a castle on rising ground.

Ritchie, A. R. G., 5/05/1977, Site of Exmouth Castle, Exmouth (Correspondence). SDV349783.

The rising ground in the area of Boarden Barn and Radenstile Lane is suggested as the possible site of the castle. There is a house in the vicinity called Castle Park and the bank on the south side of Boarden Lane is though to be significant.
