Full description

GRINSELL 44A, Untitled Source (Report - Survey). SDV119692.

Vis=17/7/1972 (grinsell) heath. Diameter 8m, height 0.6m. In 1868 or 1869 kirwan also excavated a barrow of peat with flint and stone, probably with retaining circle in presence of exeter naturalists club. Dug from south. No interment found. Possibly this barrow (grinsell 44a).

A survey undertaken by exeter archaeology after ploughing just n of the barrow group in july 2002 found no damage to this group (manning).

The 1975 os record asserts that this barrow is scheduled. Although shown on the am7, it is described as 'destroyed' and is not scheduled (fmg).

A barrow of flints no 68. Hurriedly excavated by kirwan in 1870; the south side has been dug down and left as it was (hutchinson).

Exeter Archaeology, 2002, Ball Hill (Site Visit). SDV351833.

Site visit on 5th April 2002, to ploughed area on Ball Hill adjacent to barrows. No finds were recovered or features identified. None of the barrows appear to have been affected.

SMR describe bowl barrow 8 metres diameter by 0.5 metre high with no ditch. Excavated in 19th century. During field survey nothing located at exact grid reference given. However, bowl barrow located at grid reference SY17580 94375 assumed to be the same one. Mound 7.5 metres diameter by 0.6 metre high has flat top on west side and is disturbed on east side. (Vehicle track on north edge separates this mound from barrow site 372). This is central barrow of a line of three closely spaced barrows which run north- northeast from the southeast field boundary (see also sites 370, 372).

SMR describe barrow 8 metres diameter by 0.5 metre high. In 2002 barrow located at SY 1758 9437 assumed to be same one. Mound 7.5 metres diameter by 0.6 metre high.
