Full description

Ministry of Public Building and Works, Southleigh and Fairway Group of Barrows on Broad Down (Schedule Document). SDV342868.

Southern section of Bronze Age cemetery, extending to Farway Hill and Gittisham Hill. Thirteen are more or less intact, others recently destroyed by deep cultivation. Ground previously cultivated in early 19th century.

Worth, R. N., 1880, 2nd Report of the Barrow Committee, 130 (Article in Serial). SDV123157.

Barrow no 49, on Broad Down. Low mound, scarcely visible except when field has been ploughed and harrowed. Accumulation of white flints.

Fox, A., 1948, The Broad Down (Farway) Necropolis and the Wessex Culture in Devon, 1-19 (Article in Serial). SDV123165.

No longer visible. Other details: Map.

Ordnance Survey Archaeology Division, 1975 - 1980, SY19SE12 (Ordnance Survey Archaeology Division Card). SDV342869.

Barrow 'J'. Visited on 03/02/1982. A distinct rise in the hedge bank is accompanied (within the field on its south side) by a semi-circular mound measuring 14.0 metres along the hedge and 6.0 metres from it. At best 0.2 metres high, but quite possibly represents the remains of the barrow. Other details: Plan.

Grinsell, L. V., 1983, The Barrows of South and East Devon, 34 (Article in Serial). SDV337013.

Other details: Barrow 21B.

Sainsbury, I. S., 1991, Barrows (Worksheet). SDV342870.

Visited in October 1991. Still about 14 metres along the hedge and 0.2 metres high. The road and hedgeline curve around here, suggesting they purposely avoided the barrow. No evidence of the barrow to the north of the hedge, under heavy scrub, although the ditch along side the hedge has cut through the base of the barrow.

Simpson, S. J. + Noble, S., 1993, Archaeological Survey and Management Study of Areas on Gittisham Hill, Farway Hill, and Broad Down, East Devon, 26 (Report - Survey). SDV123162.

Visited on 04/11/1992. Stable, under pasture.

Salvatore, J. P., 1997, Bowl Barrow, Part of a Group in Seven Barrow Field on Broad Down, 144379 (Un-published). SDV342871.

Visited on 12/08/1997. Bowl barrow visible as ploughed-down mound extending beneath hedgebank to its north. Diameter 14.5 metres (of which about half lies in field and half in waste ground to north, the 2 halves separated by a hedge) with a height of about 0.2 metres where seen in the field. No reported traces of surrounding ditch. North of hedge it is not visible as a mound, although this is an area of waste ground where vegetation may obscure it.
