Full description

Devon County Council, 1838-1848, Tithe Mosaic, approximately 1838-1848 (Cartographic). SDV349431.

The Tithe Map shows Redstone farm, which comprises a pair of buildings in a yard with garden to the south-west. One further building lies in the field to the north (presumably a barn). 112-2 on the Apportionment ('House and court').

Ordnance Survey, 1880-1899, First Edition Ordnance 25 inch map (Cartographic). SDV336179.

The late 19th century historic map shows Redstone, which now only has one remaining building in the farmyard area. The barn to the north has some alterations present.

Ordnance Survey, 1904 - 1906, Second Edition Ordnance Survey 25 inch Map (Cartographic). SDV325644.

The early 20th century historic map shows the farm to have deteriorated further; buildings appear to have fallen into disrepair, which would fit time-wise with the development of the reservoir. 'Rain Gauge' depicted near the remains of the barn.

Greeves, T. A. P., 1979, South West Water Authority Burrator Survey, no 47,48 / plans (Report - non-specific). SDV278356.

Site of Redstone Farm. To the north of track leading up to Sheepstor. The dwelling house was deliberately destroyed and leaves little to show its extent. A photo shows it to have been a small four room cottage with porch. Abandoned in about 1922 (Haynes, cited by Greeves).

Royal Commission on the Historical Monuments of England, 1985, Aerial Photograph Project (Dartmoor) - Dartmoor Pre-NMP (Cartographic). SDV319854.

Not visible 1946 Royal Air Force vertical aerial photographs.

Gerrard, S., 1993-2002, Monument Protection Programme Alternative Action Report, 7/5/1993 (Report - non-specific). SDV145710.

Very little remains of this monument therefore it is not of national importance. This monument forms part of an important group of historic farmsteads. However, many of the others survive much better. In addition this farmstead's field system has been totally afforested. This monument has seen considerable damage and whilst archaeological deposits undoubtedly survive, other similar sites in the area are in a much better state of preservation.

White, P., 2013, Previously Unsurveyed Dartmoor Historic Farmsteads (Un-published). SDV352501.

Redstone is included in list of lost farmsteads. No further information provided.
