Full description

Ordnance Survey, 1880-1899, First Edition Ordnance 25 inch map (Cartographic). SDV336179.

Site of a field boundary shown on 19th century map with a footpath along the southern side and a further field boundary to the north.

National Monuments Record, 1980, SX8849:SF, 1743/140 (Aerial Photograph). SDV341532.

A linear bank roughly parallel with the shore with a roughly circular vegetation mark to the seaward side, are recorded. Situation suggests possible defensive function but the ring lies on a quite steep slope.

National Trust, 1984, Dart Estuary, West (Report - non-specific). SDV340982.

It may be a defensive earthwork, but the date of it is not known.

Ordnance Survey Archaeology Division, 1986, SX84NE5 (Ordnance Survey Archaeology Division Card). SDV341533.

The linear bank is the 0.7 metre high boundary of a field 80 metres long and 20 metres wide, adjacent to another immediately to the north west which is shown on the 1954 Ordnance Survey map. Both are now disused and reverted to rough pasture. The circular vegetation patch was not identified but since the ground slopes very steeply seaward of the field it seems an unlikely situation for an archaeological work.

Batty, M., 2003, South Devon Coast Path Project: a study of the archaeology along the coast path in the South Hams from Staddon Heights to Sharkham Point, 81 (Un-published). SDV336214.

Area under heavy scrub growth and circular vegetation patch not identified.

Pink, F., 2014-2015, South Devon Coast Rapid Coastal Zone Assessment Survey Desk-Based Assessment (Interpretation). SDV357736.
