Opening of New Stoodleigh Bridge in August 1998.

Newspaper article noting dismantling of Stoodleigh Bridge and villagers left stranded as temporary bridge was swept away during storms. Delay in new bridge build due to lack of bowstring girders.


Department of Environment, 1972, Tiverton (List of Blds of Arch or Historic Interest). SDV52494.

Road bridge over river. Probably mid 19th century. Rubble and ashlar abutments and riveted iron girder bridge with bowstring parapets with latticed bracing. Single-span bridge with quadrant plan to sides of abutments; 9-bays to each parapet and 18 beams under the bridge road. Other details: LBS No. 485200.

Old Stoodleigh Bridge, a single span wrought iron bowstring girder bridge, with inverted-U top flanges. Thought to have been made by Hennet's foundry at Bridgwater between 1861 and 1866, possibly for the owners of Stoodleigh Court. It was demolished in 1998 and now lies discarded in a nearby wood. George Hennet was one of Brunel's engineers and contractors. Other details: Photos in Parish file.

The structure should be removed from the List of Buildings of Special Architectural and Historic Interest because it is no longer extant and its special interest has therefore been lost.
