Two roughly circular pits circa 10m in diameter are visible as earthworks on aerial photographs of the 1940s onwards, centred on circa SX58915991 and SX58905987, on the south-east facing slopes of Headon Down. A radial corona of raised earth is visible surrounding each pit.
Previously interpreted as trial pits, it is probable that the earthworks are actually the remains of bomb craters of Second World war date.
The earthworks remain clearly visible on digital images derived from lidar data captured between 1998 and 2017 and aerial photographs of 2018.
