Summary

Remains of an oval enclosure north-east of Huccaby Farm. Greeves suggests possible Prehistoric date, but 1996 field visit classifys as post-Medieval in date. This site is included in the local list of Nationally Important Dartmoor sites.

Greeves, T. A. P., 1984, Enclosure north-east of Huccaby Farm (Worksheet). SDV220229.

Apparent oval prehistoric enclosure in north-west quadrant of Ordnance Survey field number 9344, much obscured by bracken at time of visit. Possibly has at least one hut circle attached to inside edge of enclosure on the north side, and one attached to outside edge on south side. Maximum diameter of the enclosure would be very approximately 50.0 meters. Appears to have internal division running approx west-north-west to east-south-east.

(10/01/1996) Centred SX 65937350. A small sub-square enclosure containing three well-defined cultivation terraces lies in dense gorse at the crest of the ridge overlooking the left bank of the West Dart River within the fields of Huccaby Farm. The enclosure is situated in the corner of a field and utilises two drystone walls on its NE and NW sides. The SE side is formed partly by a lynchet and partly by a low stony bank while the SW edge is marked by a prominent lynchet averaging 0.8m high. The interior is subdivided by two further lynchets up to 0.75m high. There is no trace of the internal hut circle described by the Devon SMR while that to the south is a rather amorphous clump of displaced stones and boulders of indeterminate date.
This enclosure would seem to be of medieval or later in form and probably represents an area of intensive cultivation though it is possible that it overlies a similarly prehistoric feature.

This site was considered for designation as a Scheduled Ancient Monument during the Monument Protection Programme. The programme ended before the entire list of sites was successfully scheduled so this is included on a local list of Nationally Important Sites.
