Full description

Ordnance Survey, 1880-1899, First Edition Ordnance 25 inch map (Cartographic). SDV336179.

'Tolchmoor Gate' shown on 19th century map.

Author thinks it is an 'ancient' stone and the gatepost is a secondary usage. Other details: Plate.

Beckerlegge, J. J., 1936, Fifth Report of the Plymouth and District Branch, 152 (Article in Serial). SDV343523.

Holed stone by the side of the road at Tolchmoor gate. Formerly used for barring the road. When the road was widened recently this stone was set further back.

Tolchmoor Gate holed stone and local field walls been bulldozed in 1980 into heaps of rubble in advance of china clay workings.

This stone has been uprooted once more in connection with roadworks and is said to be replaced nearby.

The holed stone had been resited on the north side of road and on west side of the hedgebank at SX58066163 and set back some distance from the road edge.

An upright moorland slab with a square socket cut through its face near the top. It is 1.2 metres high and a maximum 1.3 metres by 0.5 metres at its base. The 0.1 metre square socket is designed to hold a timber spar. It was moved to its present position on a wide roadside verge when the road was widened.
