Full description

SMIRKE, Untitled Source (Migrated Record). SDV148699.

Fardel stone, now in british museum. First stone with ogham inscription to be found in england. Exact find spot in dispute. Archaeological journal 1861 says that it was used for covering part of the fardel brook on the road passing within 1/2km of fardel farm. Cornwood notes by j. D. Pode and c. Pode say the rev. Samuel pearse of cadleigh found it forming part of a culvert over the stream crossing the ivybridge road on its way to fardel. R. H. Worth agrees with this. Slab inscribed with both roman and ogham lettering. Roman letters on the upper surface read "sagranis" or "sagranvi". The underside had the inscription "fanoni maqvirini" or "magvirini" (smirke).
