Summary

A large curvilinear single ditched cropmark enclosure of potential prehistoric or Roman date is visible on aerial photographs taken from 1984 onwards, to the east of Woodley Farm, Newton St. Cyres.

East of woodley farm. Large curvilinear single ditched enclosure. Recorded as cropmark by f. Griffith june 1984. Possibly related to curvilinear feature to the east - sx89ne/61 (ap).

Rapid examination of ap suggests the presence of a linear feature visible as a cropmark from sx87229744, curving n (appearing both sides of the road) to sx87229759 and then turning w to sx87149760, c.400m w of east holme. An apparent out-turn of this linear where it approaches the s side of the road, may indicate an entrance and the linear may represent part of an enclosure of prehistoric or roman date (nmr citing miller).

A very large single ditch enclosure, roughly rectangular, is visible as a cropmark on aerial photographs (p1-7). Its dimensions are 198m x 143m. Only two thirds of the enclosure are visible: the south-west sides do not appear on the photos. The road marked as Riscombe Hill cuts the enclosure from west to east. The feature was digitally plotted as part of the National Mapping Programme.
