Full description

Ordnance Survey, 1880-1899, First Edition Ordnance 25 inch map (Cartographic). SDV336179.

Two adjoining 'Hut Circles' shown on 19th century map.

Ordnance Survey, 1904 - 1906, Second Edition Ordnance Survey 25 inch Map (Cartographic). SDV325644.

Two 'Hut Circles' shown on early 20th century map,

Ordnance Survey Archaeology Division, 1950/1982, SX65NW3, Huts (Ordnance Survey Archaeology Division Card). SDV148162.

(24/03/1950) Hut circle (SX 6458 5921) These hut circles are very fragmentary, consisting of one or two isolated stones; map should read ‘site of’.
The enclosure which is shown but not described on the Ordnance Survey 6 inch map is also very vague, having been disturbed during construction of water intake.
There is a hut circle 9 feet in diameter, with an entrance on the south-west side, position is shown on the field sheet at SX6459/5915.
(14/10/1982) The features lie on a slight NW slope at around 263m OD. The huts at SX64585920 are within an area of mature conifers and have been destroyed.
The enclosure at SX64575916 is also affected and remains in part only. A hut circle is visible on the perimeter of this enclosure at SX64575914. The hut is in poor condition with a level interior of 5.5m diameter and a NW entrance. Its double-faced orthostatic walling measures 1.1m wide an 0.3m high, and is typical of walling for the whole site.
The hut at SX64605915 is in good condition with a level interior of 8.3m diameter and a SW entrance.
The remains of two other enclosures are visible in this area at SX64545912 and SX 64645921. Both have double-faced orthostatic walling and have been partially destroyed by the conifer plantation. The latter has a possible entrance gap on its east side, (See plan).
Surveyed at 1:2500 on MSD.

National Monuments Record, 1976, NMR SX6459, 1/226-228 (Aerial Photograph). SDV168294.

Hankin, C. F., 1977-1980, Harford Parish Checklist, 1976-1977 (estimated) (Worksheet). SDV149931.

This occupation site has almost been destroyed by the building of a reservoir in 1914. An enclosure and a group of hut circles on the left (south) side of the Butter Brook stood on ground now within the fenced area, planted with conifers, reserved by the Water Authority.
One hut circle remains on the open moor (MDV120061). This is very well defined, the surviving stones being of the standing type. The door jamb on the south side is a very good specimen.

Everett, C., 1978, Archaeological Survey of Some Woodlands Within the Dartmoor National Park, 18, Map 15, BB2 (Report - Survey). SDV360464.

BB2 Hut circles SX 6458 5921. Two small hut circles were recorded in 1950 from an Ordnance Survey visit when the condition was said to be ‘fragmentary’. These features could not be found. They may lie beneath the deep layer of brash in this part of the plantation, but may have been destroyed by forest machinery.

Hankin, C. F., 1980, An Archaeological Check-List for Harford, 1976-1977 (estimated) (Un-published). SDV361875.
