Full description

Devon County Council, 1838-1848, Tithe Mosaic, approximately 1838-1848 (Cartographic). SDV349431.

The large house is not present on mid 19th century Tithe Map. The Apportionment for 'Great Cator' lists Field Number 1492 as 'Houses & C', Field Number 1493 as 'Court' and Field Number 1494 as 'Garden'.

'Cator Court' shown on 19th century map as a large irregular shaped building with ornamental garden to the south and a large rectangular building to the north-west. To the north are two large irregular shaped buildings with a narrow L-shaped building to the north.

Cator was mentioned as 'Cadatrea' in 1167 and various other spellings in the 13th and 14th centuries. In 1412 is was 'Cadetru' and 'Nythercatrew' in 1481.

Site visited on 27th July 1979. Modern name Great Cator. An old longhouse, much altered, half of which is let to holiday makers and half of which is almost derelict.
