HER Number:MDV36619
Name:PRISON in the Parish of Stokenham

Summary

At stokenham there are some remains of an old building called 'the prison', near the church (fox). Vis=2/2/1987 (os). According to local information a small garage, next to the church house inn, is traditionally said to have been 'the old prison'. The structure is opposite the west end of the church. It measures 6m x 3m and is 2m high. The south and west walls are of mortared stone, the other sides are mostly rebuilt with modern materials and the roof is of asbestos sheets. There is a small square window in the south wall, but nothing in the structure that can be dated. The building may have been built as a 'lock up' in the c18 or c19 though it is not described in the tithe award of 1841, but since the hundred court was anciently held at stokenham there may have been an earlier origin.(os).
