A transcription of a linear ditch corresponds to the grid reference for PRN166946, recorded as “A length of double ditch, 92m long, is visible as a cropmark on aerial photographs (p1) and was digitally plotted as part of the National Mapping Programme. A further fragment of crop mark ditch at SX 90179 85578 (p2) may be a continuation of the same feature which is most likely to be part of a trackway”. The photograph reference is DCC DAP BO/8 (NMR SX8985/12) 07-Jul-84.

Hegarty, C. + Knight, S. + Sims, R., 2014-2015, East and Mid Devon River Catchments National Mapping Programme Project (Interpretation). SDV356883.

Dark linear cropmarks are visible on specialist oblique aerial photographs taken in the summer months between 1984 and 1989. At the south-west end two roughly parallel and slightly curvilinear cropmarks are 1.5-3.5 metres wide and circa 5 to 10 metres apart, whilst a separate section approximately 190 metres to the north-west shows only as a single ditch of circa 2.5 metres in width and 90 metres in length. This feature does not appear to fit into the alignment of the field pattern of probable medieval origin depicted on the Tithe map, and may predate the medieval period. It is interpreted as a possible routeway.
This feature had been transcribed during the North Devon/Winkleigh Biomass NMP project, corresponding to the grid reference for PRN166946, and so has not been re-transcribed for the EMDRC project.
Many of the aerial photographs consulted by the survey are copies of DAPs held by the Historic England Archive. In some cases these have been recorded as separate sources. This is because variations in the way the prints have been processed could result in images on which archaeological features are visible to a greater or lesser degree.
